Rick Karsdorp is finally becoming the player that AS Roma wanted him to be. Its only took 3 and a half years, but Roma and Paulo Fonseca are finally reaping the rewards of the Rick Karsdorp excellent form.

Signed from Feyenoord in the summer of 2017 for €14m with a further €5m on bonuses. But days into his AS Roma career Karsdorp would pick up a medial knee ligament injury which would keep him out of action until October. Muscle Fatigue would keep him out until the latter part of October, Muscle injuries are quite common after picking up ligament injury in the knee. As the player is putting more pressure on his body to come back. 25th October 2017, Rick Karsdorp made his AS Roma debut playing right back in Eusebio Di Francesco 4-3-3 formation. The game was against Crotone which Roma won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Diego Perotti from the penalty spot. Rick Karsdorp played 82 minutes of the game before being taken off and replaced by Alessandro Florenzi. It was heartbreak as that was Karsdorp only appearance for the club that season, a cruciate knee injury would rule out the dutchman for the rest of the season. He was an unnamed substitute in the final game of that season away at Sassuolo, a game which Roma won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kostas Manolas. That win made sure Roma finished 3rd in the Scudetto.

The 2018-19 season was very indifferent for Rick Karsdorp, he made his return to the starting XI on the 31st August 2018 in Roma defeat away at AC Milan. Eusebio Di Francesco changed the set up and went 3-4-1-2 and gave Karsdorp the right midfield role. His return lasted only 77 minutes and was replaced by Davide Santon. Rick Karsdorp would only make another 13 appearances for Roma that season in all competitions with 8 starts and 5 appearances on the bench. Injuries, poor form, and Roma poor form that season would hamper Karsdorp progression at AS Roma. In March of 2019 Eusebio Di Francesco was replaced by Claudio Ranieri. Karsdorp found his playing time under Ranieri cut short, he only featured for 163 minutes under Claudio Ranieri with 2 starts and 3 substitute appearances. Claudio Ranieri had preferred Alessandro Florezni in the right back role for the final games of the season as the club finished 6th in Serie A.

2019-20 Season saw Paulo Fonseca take over at AS Roma and Rick Karsdorp was sent out on loan back to Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie. The season was curtailed due to the global pandemic, Karsdorp did make his mark back at Feyenoord. Played a total of 24 games in all competitions spanning 1,818 minutes. Scoring 2 goals and 5 assists. The 2 goals were against FC Porto in the Europa League and against ADO Den Hag in the Eredivisie.

Current season the 2020/21 campaign has been Rick Karsdorp finest to date at AS Roma and we are finally seeing the player that Roma bought in the summer of 2017. There were rumours that a deal to Genoa was almost done after a loan deal to Atalanta collapsed, but Paulo Fonseca wanted Karsdorp in his squad and to fight for his place. Fonseca had switched to the 3-4-2-1 formation for the latter half of the 2019-20 season with success and he has continued to use this set up for this season. Karsdorp played 72 minutes in the opening game of the season away at Hellas Verona before being replaced by Davide Santon. He then missed the next 3 games due to a muscle injury. Since the return from injury Rick Karsdorp has been ever present in Paulo Fonseca side, starting 11 out of the next 12 Serie A games. This season to date he has amassed 1064 minutes in Serie A and a further 117 minutes in the Europa League where he has been used sparingly with 1 start and 2 Substitute appearances.

The last two months has seen an uprise in form and a lot of faith shown in him by Roma and Paulo Fonseca and Rick Karsdorp is repaying the faith on the pitch. Since the last international break back in November, Rick Karsdorp has got 4 assists to his name in the last 9 matches. With two assists in the last three games and playing a part in the penalty picked up away at Crotone. Karsdorp played the ball across to Borja Mayoral who was fouled in the penalty area.

The highlight for me in Rick Karsdorp this season was his assist for Roma 5th goal away at Bologna in the middle of December. Started his run early when Gonzalo Villar did a cheeky back heel to Jordan Veretout and attacked the space which had been left open by the Bologna defence. Edin Dzeko turned on the ball and saw the on running Rick Karsdorp and passed the ball into space down Roma right flank for him to use his power and speed. Ibrahim M’baye could not keep up to speed with the flying Dutch man and succumbed to a hamstring injury, Karsdorp found himself in so much space and assisted Henrikh Mkhitaryan who scored from close range. Ibrahim M’baye pulled a muscle and had to be replaced. The time from Edin Dzeko pass to Roma goal was 9 seconds all done with a great attacking instinct by Rick Karsdorp.

On Roma first game of the year, Roma beat Sampdoria 1-0 thanks to a goal from Edin Dzeko which was a 29 pass move which involved all eleven players on the pitch from front to back in 84 seconds. Rick Karsdorp was involved 3 times in the build up including the pivotal cross for Edin Dzeko to score in the penalty area from close range. On the commentary you can clearly hear Rick Karsdorp yell “Bryan” for Bryan Cristante to pass into space for Rick Karsdorp to run at Tommaso Augello and cross in for Edin Dzeko to score.

After 3 and a half years at Roma with a year away on loan, Rick Karsdorp has finally settled at Roma and has made that RWB role in the 3-4-2-1 system his own. He is fast becoming one of the first names on the Roma team sheet in the last few months. All the credit must go to himself for knuckling down in training and proving himself on the pitch and to the coach Paulo Fonseca for believing in him and putting him in the team sheet for the last few months. Rick Karsdorp is finally playing a massive part for Roma this season; it has been a long ride, but it has been worth the wait.

NUR-SULTAN, 11 January 2021 – While preparations for Kazakhstan’s parliamentary elections were efficiently run, an uncompetitive campaign and systemic de facto limitations on constitutionally guaranteed fundamental freedoms left voters without genuine choice, thus missing an opportunity to pilot the announced political reforms, international observers to the parliamentary elections said in a statement today.

The observation mission, a joint undertaking of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA), found the legal framework not yet conducive to holding elections in line with OSCE commitments for democratic elections, despite a number of revisions introduced since the country’s last parliamentary elections. Numerous long-standing recommendations on issues ranging from fundamental freedoms through to eligibility to vote and stand for elections, voter registration, and the publication of election results, remain to be addressed.

'We welcome the efficient organization of the elections, especially given the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic which was rightfully not allowed to impact the exercise of voting,” said Kristian Vigenin, Special co-ordinator and leader of the short-term OSCE observer mission. 'On the other hand, we remain concerned about the political environment elections took place in. OSCE principles call for unhindered pluralism and a flourishing, free and vibrant civil society: our hope is that the 'listening state' concept promoted by the President will truly enable this to happen and that all citizens' voices will be valued.'

Some 12 million voters were registered to take part in yesterday’s elections. Preparations for the election were efficiently managed by the election commissions in line with legal deadlines. Sessions of the central election commission were open to party representatives and observers, however, decisions were made ahead of formal sessions. The appointment and composition of commissions at all levels raised concerns about their independence. Election day was generally calm but was tarnished by concerted measures to prevent some domestic observers from an effective observation.

There are still major barriers to freedom of association and there are few political options, with no new parties registered since 2013. The political landscape is heavily dominated by the ruling party, and the distinction between party and government is often blurred. As all political parties contesting the elections supported the policies of the ruling party, the campaign was not competitive, and voters had no genuine political alternatives to choose from.

Curbs on the freedom of association, of assembly and of expression had a negative impact on campaign activities, which remained low key in the run-up to election day. While public debate is shifting online, providing some additional space for a wider range of opinions, national legislation continues to undermine the rights to freedom of expression and access to information.

“Long-standing and systemic shortcomings with regard to respect of fundamental freedoms are of significant concern and restrict the political space,” said Jarosław Marcin Domański, Head of the ODIHR limited election observation mission. “An election can only be truly democratic when voters have real political options to choose between, and the voice of civil society is heard and appreciated.”

The international election observation mission to the parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan totalled 48 observers from 20 countries, including 41 ODIHR-deployed experts and long-term observers, and 7 parliamentarians and staff from the OSCE PA.
